Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz, colored by iron impurities and natural irradiation. It forms inside volcanic rock cavities called geodes, sometimes growing to enormous sizes. The name comes from the Greek amethystos — 'not intoxicated' — as ancient Greeks believed it prevented drunkenness.
